Predhovor
Časopis ponúka možnosť odbornej a vedeckej verejnosti z oblasti jazykovedy a literárnej vedy vrátane doktorandov a odborníkov z praxe publikovať čiastkové výsledky svojich výskumov, ale takisto prinášať informácie o nových odborných a vedeckých monografiách či zborníkoch v podobe recenzií.

Súkromný a verejný priestor v próze Stanislava Rakúsa
The Private and Public Spaces in Prose of Stanislav Rakús
Tamara Janecová
Katedra slovenského jazyka a literatúry, Pedagogická fakulta Trnavskej univerzity v Trnave
Abstract: The study focuses on the way of creating contradictions between public and private spaces in prose of Stanislav Rakús after November 1989, especially in the work entitled Temporálne poznámky. The interpretation of the texts is based on their semiotic‑structural analysis. The prose analysis focuses on the invariant type of a protagonist, characterized by their profession related to education and developed inner worlds. The public space is associated with images of institutional pressure on the individual and a mechanical, simplifying way of teaching literature. The private space, defined in particular in the partnership, is conceived in Rakús’ text as a tense alternation of conflicts and silence. Before the conflicts that protagonist experiences in both public and private spaces, he escapes into his internal world, world of literature, alcohol and flaneurism. The aim of the study is to contribute to the research of Slovak literature after 1989.
Keywords: Stanislav Rakús, Temporálne poznámky, Private and public space, flaneurism.

Semiotické základy teórie významu podľa Ch. S. Peirca a Ch. W. Morrisa
Semiotic Foundations of the Theory of Meaning by CH. S. Peirce and CH. W. Morris
Marek Mikušiak
Katedra slovenského jazyka a literatúry, Pedagogická fakulta, Trnavská univerzita v Trnave
Abstract: The basic notions of semiotics have been often mistakenly defined in linguistics. The aim of the paper is to clarify some crucial concepts such as an interpretant, unlimited semiosis, and other related terms. The first part of the paper deals with Peirce’s semiotic model. The second part focuses on the behaviouristic model designed by Ch. W. Morris. The models are presented as semiotic foundations of the theory of meaning, especially with regard to the signs expressing general concepts. Finally, the behaviouristic theory of signs is criticized for establishing unnecessary conceptual restrictions on the theory of meaning.
Keywords: Semiotics, Charles S. Peirce, Charles W. Morris, Unlimited Semiosis, Sign, Interpretant.

The Tension of Christianity and Paganism in the Oikonymy of Záhorie
Andrej Závodný
Katedra slovenského jazyka a literatúry, Pedagogická fakulta, Trnavská univerzita v Trnave
Abstract: The Christianising efforts, especially of the Great Moravian and post Great Moravian monarchs, led in the following period to a tense coexistence of an original polytheistic religion with a new monotheistic religion. The Church tried to suppress paganism in such a way that it had churches built in the immediate vicinity of settlements with pagan population, and then established new Christian settlements next to them, naming them frequently according to a particular church’s patron. In the oikonymy of Záhorie, the westernmost region of Slovakia, there have been preserved many examples directly or indirectly reflecting a motivational tension between the older pagan names of settlements and the younger names motivated by the Christian themes. The analysed onymic material also shows that the tense relationship between these two groups of settlement names continued approx. up to the 13th – 14th century, and then new names which would differentiate Christian from non Christian settlements were not originating any more.
Keywords: oikonymy, toponymy, field name, motivation, Christian, paganism, religion.

On Secondary School Leaving Examination from French – Diachronic Survey and a Contemporary State Analysis
Jana Bírová
Katedra románskych jazykov a literatúr, Pedagogická fakulta, Univerzita Komenského v Bratislave, Slovensko
Abstract: Final examination from foreign languages has been developed since the twentieth century when the focus was put on memorisation of texts and their oral reproduction in front of the committee. This form of school‑leaving examination lasted until 2004. Following the entrance of Slovakia into the European Union, the language policy changed, trying to reform the final examinations so that the results become objective across the country. The series of reforms, however, also brings a number of difficulties, such as low‑threshold conditions for examination requirements – a 33% cross‑border success rate, which is largely unchanged compared to other countries and other international exams. At present, in addition to the requirements, French language teachers are also concerned with the declining tendency and little interest of students to graduate from the French language within the final examination. The aim of the paper is to give a historical overview of the forms of the final examination as well as to present some interesting facts from the present, expressed by the teachers of French in 2017.
Keywords: final examination, French, contemporary state, reforms, student.

Petra Hitková
Katedra anglického jazyka a literatúry, Pedagogická fakulta, Trnavská univerzita v Trnave
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to report on findings of an empirical experiment carried out over a period of one school year on a sample of 176 third grade primary school pupils in Bratislava region. The main aim of the experiment was to integrate storytelling into English lessons at six primary classrooms in Bratislava region and thus be able to determine whether it helps improve pupils’ attitude towards English language as a school subject. The paper focuses on the reasons why using narrative techniques while telling or reading stories is an effective tool in foreign language teaching. Stories and picture books can provide a highly motivating, engaging and realistic source of genuine language interaction in the classroom. The paper briefly clarifies the theoretical background of the problem and gives an overview of research previously conducted in Slovakia and abroad. Furthermore, it describes the selection criteria used for choosing the stories and authentic books which were read aloud every week in the experimental groups. The quantitative data analysis confirms the positive impact that storytelling has on pupils’ attitude towards English as a school subject. New empirical evidence obtained from the results of the experiment clearly indicate that using narrative techniques improves the effectiveness of the educational process in primary education and thus should be used by language teachers on regular basis.
Keywords: narrative techniques, young learners, storytelling, stories, primary school, motivation, authentic books.

Nature or civilization – a comparative study of premodifying attributes in English and Slovak tourist texts
Danica Maleková
Katedra anglického jazyka a literatúry, Filozofická fakulta, Katolícka univerzita v Ružomberku, Slovensko
Abstract: The aim of the paper is a cross‑cultural comparison of the most dominant premodifiers with partly evaluative function in English and Slovak tourist texts with a view to compare the two linguo‑cultural communities in terms of values. The study is based on two corpora of texts promoting small‑scale accommodation in the mountainous regions in Britain and Slovakia, counting 10 000 words each. The findings reveal significant differences in terms of emphasis the two cultures place on the category of ‘nature’ in comparison with that of ‘civilization’.
Keywords: cross‑cultural comparison, evaluative adjectives, semantic categories, cultural values.
