Anton Pokrivčák

Katedra anglického jazyka a literatúry, Pedagogická fakulta, Trnavská univerzita v Trnave, Slovensko

Abstract: The article discusses the literature and culture of Slovak‑Americans. It first points to the most important work written by this minority, Thomas Bell’s Out of This Furnace, and then analyses the novel The Sorrows of Marienka by a Slovak‑American author of the second generation, Stefan S. Koban. It uses the critical approach of imagology to point to the images of Slovak emigrants, especially the novel’s protagonist Marienka, as well as characteristic stereotypes that they are confronted with in their life in the new country.

Keywords: Slovak‑American, culture, emigration, imagology, stereotype, image.

The Communicational Potential of Prison Slang

Lenka Haluzová

Trnavská univerzita, Slovenská republika

Abstract: The paper focuses on the issue of the definition of terms slang and argot in linguistics and maps the shift from recognizing prison speech as a tool of which the primary function is concealment to recognizing its identification function. In the paper we are dealing with the typological characterization of the speech of prisoners with the aim to point out the conclusions leading to the classification of the penitentiary sociolect as a type of slang and to the clarification of the presence of its cryptic function.

Keywords: argot, slang, sociolect, prison, communication strategy, social status.

Postoj nenatívnych učiteľov angličtiny k hlasnému čítaniu žiakom na hodinách anglického jazyka

Attitude of Non‑native Teachers of English towards Reading Stories to Pupils during English Language Lessons

Petra Hitková

Trnavská univerzita, Pedagogická fakulta

Abstract: In Slovakia, the PISA test results of primary school pupils in reading literacy have been below the average of the OECD countries for more than 10 years. Results suggest that about one‑third of 15‑year‑olds did not reach the elementary level in reading literacy. Based on a review of literature on improving effectiveness of language acquisition and improving listening and reading skills through listening to and working with stories, an online survey was conducted on a sample of 96 primary school non‑native teachers of English, aimed to identify their attitude towards using stories and storytelling in their language teaching. Analysis of the responses demonstrated that less than a third of non‑native teachers had tried storytelling in their career. However, the results of the survey indicate that majority of the respondents would attend a workshop on how to incorporate reading or telling stories to their pupils in order to make their teaching more effective. Based on the results, it is recommended that a seminar or a workshop be incorporated in pre‑service, as well as in‑service non‑native teacher training. Further project should be aimed at the workshop design and should involve specialists from several universities in order to target non‑native language teachers across the whole country.

Keywords: storytelling, authentic books, teacher training, young learners, non‑native teacher, reading stories, ELT.
