Preparation
In the preparation stage, the focus of assessment is on the choice of materials (professional English books, English belles-lettres in the case of writing thesis on literature, professional English journals, reviews available either in the libraries or different professional websites). Then the evaluation of new words, preparation and presentation, is very important. Last but not least, the way students are able to transfer information from their mother tongue into English, searching for equivalents and translating the term properly. |
Presentation Evaluating presentation skills, the focus is on the stages of the presentation. The given criteria are for assessing the introduction, addressing the audience, the topic announcement and reasoning for the topic choice. During the development stage, not only the ideas and supporting comments, but also the way the students are able to create independent ideas effectively and a way of expressing their own opinion about the most significant problems are included. At the end of the talk it is necessary to recall the main aim and the major points of the talk and successful completion of the presentation (conclusion). Fluency and readiness to answer studentsʼ questions give an assessor a picture of studentʼs preparation for the presentation. A successful presentation is achieved by the synchronisation of a presenter and the audience, which involves eye contact, speaking without reading from papers, attracting the audience, movements, gestures, miming and so on (overall performance). Another presentational aspect is the use of audiovisual aids. Attention is paid to their quantity, the size of the letters on the transparencies, the studentsʼ dependence on them, and their effective use. |
Language Competence – Production The criterion grammar is based on the usage of typical EAP grammatical patterns: passive voice, ing- and ed- participles, clauses of purpose, expressing cause and result, possibility, likelihood, certainty, obligation, comparison, etc. Vocabulary is assessed through its range, accuracy and appropriacy. Task achievement covers the content appropriate to the title, the level of presentation and appropriate use of language to context, function and intention, fully developed contributions to the topic and flexibility in management. Organisation of the production depends on the logical organisation of the presented ideas and the ways of moving to new points, of delaying description of a point until later on or recycling some important information or bringing some point to the foreground. |
Language Competence – Interaction In the criterion of communicative interaction, the level of active, responsive and initiative interaction and awareness of the norms of taking turns are assessed. |
