Reading Skills and Sub-skills
Academic Reading
Reading for academic purposes is a multifaceted subject. There are many reasons for reading during university studies such as:
  • to obtain information (facts, data, etc. – British/American studies),
  • to understand theories and ideas (Introduction to English, ELT Methodology),
  • to discover authorsʼ viewpoints (English and American Literature),
  • to seek evidence for their own point of view (Creative Writing, EAP).
In the process of reading, students focus on subject-content of what they read and the language in which it is expressed.
Academic reading involves the purpose and comprehension. For effective reading in EAP, using the method SQ3R for intensive reading is very useful.
