Inefficient reading methods, such as struggling word-for-word through a text, plowing on from beginning to end and stumbling at every unfamiliar item, are wasteful procedures. In the real world, reading is a means to an end and not an end in itself as it is a purposeful activity as we read for different purposes and should master the strategies best suited to achieving them. The motivation to read is supplied by a specific purpose the reader has in extracting the information that a text contains. The reader usually does not always require the same level of comprehension, detail, or recall from their reading. Therefore it is efficient and profitable to vary reading techniques and speed according to the purpose in reading. Different reading tasks require different degrees of understanding and attention. It is not important to read everything or give equal weight to each word. The texts contain information of varying importance to the purpose in reading.
