Textual cohesion is the way a text is held together by particular linguistic means. These include connectives, reference, and vocabulary. Connectives are important because they help the reader to anticipate and find his/her way through a text. In academic English we rely on formal connectives, such as However, Nevertheless, etc. Reference words are simply words that refer to, or are used instead of, other words. For example, the sentence They asked him to go there and he did has four examples of reference.
