Using Conventional Abbreviations
Conventional Abbreviations
Note-taking tips:
  • Make up your own abbreviations.
  • If you are in a hurry, leave out definite and indefinite articles, pronouns, basic verbs.
  • Use always numbers (1, 2, or 3) instead of words (one, two, three).
  • Abbreviate any word by: leaving out the vowels, using only the first few letters, using the first and last letter.
On the other hand, there are conventional abbreviations, used in the English-speaking academic world. Many of them are used frequently such as yr for year, yrs for years, vs for versus, dept for department, govt for government, max for maximum and min for minimum. Some of the frequent abbreviations are based on their Latin origin such as eg (exempli gratia) for for example, ie (id est) for it means, etc. (et cetera) for so forth (so on).
