Lexical Relations
Another way of looking at vocabulary is to relate individual items to other items in systematic ways, done through aspects of lexical relations such as synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy and hypernymy.

SYNONYMS

Synonyms are words with the same or nearly the same meaning, e.g. get worse/deteriorate.

ANTONYMS

Antonyms are words with opposite meanings, e.g. systematic/random.

Synonyms and antonyms are used as a learning strategy to vary meanings. Does X mean the same as Y?

HYPONYMS AND HYPERNYMS

Hyponyms are words that represent different categories covered by a superordinate: assessment – testing.
Hypernyms are words that refer to broad categories or general concepts: oral testing is a hypernym for a more precise more like testing oral production.
