Abstract: The purpose of
presented research is to explain the temporary influence of the simple observation
of individual honey bees observed
in both natural and school habitats, and to explain the impact
of this observation on the formation of pupil’s attitude towards insect. The results of
experimental observation were subsequently compared with a confirmatory group of pupils, who
were not present during the observation and manipulation with the exemplary species, but were acquiring knowledge of insect only by using a biology textbook during the lessons. The attitudes of individual pupils to insect were identified according to a Likert scale (1-5) by using a questionnaire containing 25 questions. The attitude questionnaire was given to both groups of
pupils and its content was focused
on the insect conservation, insect behaviour, insect collecting, insect rearing, and fear of animals. The
statements attitude focusing on attractiveness, color and observing the behavior of individuals honeybee in natural and school conditions were scored using
a bipolar Likert scale (1-0). The results of the
attitude rating of pupils attending either observation or lecture were subsequently analysed by these research groups, and according to the results, the questionnaire demonstrated a high value of reliability
(Cronbach’s alpha >
0.78). After the rating, the statistically significant effects were found in attitudes towards behaviour of the exemplary species according to comparison of the results of
the both research groups. Other attitudinal dimensions (protection of insect, breeding,
harvesting and fear of insects) as
well as the question of attractiveness and color type of insect were considered
to be without any statistical significance.
Key words: observation, insect, honey bee, attitude, pupil, school, nature

Overview of Research on Learner-Centered Teaching

Abstract: The article
presents the results of the
research on learner-centered
teaching/learning (LCT)
in European and outside of European educational
context. The most significant research for European educational system was done by Attard et al. (2010) studying perception of LCT at the national
level and on the level of higher
education in the European Union. The other project
that contributed to development of LCT was The Birmingham
Project on LCT was run by
the Ginnis and Brandes (1996). The results of both
projects were guidebooks, publications, and practical toolkits concerning how to apply learner-centeredness in the classroom. By looking at research
outside of The European Union, we found
out that changes in political situation in countries such as Thailand
or China have an impact on application of learner-centeredness in these countries, and they reassemble the situation in Slovak Republic. One section of
the article is devoted to research of David
Nunan as the most profound researcher on LCT. In Slovakia, there
has been some conferences based on theory and recommendations regarding LCT; however, there are only a few primary studies
that support the topic.
Key words: research, learner-centered teaching, European context, David Nunan, affective factors, Slovak educational context
